Remember your calling.

Desist from the Distraction.

The idea that you are called to or be someone sits at the far end of our generation’s ideological spectrum. Our cultural climate propagates a self-constructed entirely from one’s desires and preferences. Do you want to be a zebra? Go for it, tiger! The question then is are human beings endowed with relative fluidity to simply do anything?And If so, is it an archaic thought to assume you are called to a specific task?

I love entrepreneurship and the stories that come with it. We have all heard it before. Guy meets a friend in a random ivy league dorm room. Both mildly to extremely obsessed with *insert cool interest*, they play around with a computer and Shazam they are both billionaires. Well not quite, but you get what I mean. I’m simply fascinated by the sheer ingenuity and speed that proprietorship takes off or in worse cases disastrously crashes. Most of these endeavors are also mired with what we may call blatant luck! You remember how Instagram made a billionaire after existing for a year. Like where is the luck potion that these guys are sipping on so we can dive in? Luck! I guess that’s the view from the sidelines. Hashtag OMG.

So the hot-button question that I think my generation is occupied with is how can I be maximally happy and maximally compensated. So we do what any normal Gen X person would do. We turn to the Oracle, the fountain of knowledge. Google.

I once heard a theologian say,

I do not mean to blanket everyone’s motive but our hearts are enthralled by the grandiose and remarkable. A desire to be great. In many cases, greatness is reduced to material gain or fame. And we ponder and overdose on the reality t.v show because the mind is captivated by the greatness we so seek to attain. And at this point, any talk of having a “calling” not only seems irrational but offensive.

Let me delve into what I believe a calling is. Living in a western country I would affirm a preamble that our cultural context would struggle with this thinking. Primarily because the self is exalted above family, vocation, and government. The error beckons and runs psychologically deep. However to be called is to be intrinsically indispensable. What this means is each person is endowed with qualities found nowhere else, ever.

To be called is a proclamation of what you already have in your hand. To be called is to be the only one. The error with our culture is we all want to be like one person, whoever your one person is, he (the one person)is a direct threat to the person you are and are becoming. I love having role models, believe me, i do. However, if we took 2 seconds to assess why we disagree or have strong opinions about anything, we’d see that what you have right there is we have the ability to care. If I may make it all so obvious, caring is epitomized in caring for another human being. Hence if I care for let’s say technology, it would be my utmost joy in the world when other are partaking in what I care for. You dig? You see the ultimate use for skill, talent or gifting is simply impacting another person. I love the scripture that says

I never really understood that the room would eventually be populated with people. I’m sure wherever you are reading this you are probably reading this from a device either made by Steve Jobs or Bill Gates. We get to access the room of their influence simply because they chose to realize that their ideas had consequence on the world. Never diminish the ideas your behold for we are all gasping for you to act on them, they are that important.

If you are called then accomplishments, successes, awards and even failures are not things to boast about but only tunnels that transport you into other people rooms. When you are called success does not go to your head and failure does not go to your heart because what’s in your hand is simply to create joy in others which means your happiness is only a growing commodity.

So full circle to the nerds, the entrepreneurs, the inventors and bunch of people who think they are a gift to the world. Guess what? They are.

All i’m saying is you are to. Please i’m pleading with you show us your gift.

There will only ever be only one you.
