Fulfilling Social Responsibility Via Technology

We are living in a world where gadgets and technology surround us from all directions, and have become an integral part of our daily lives. From as simple as sending out an SMS to something as major as fixing a house mortgage, technology is there to help us perform these tasks.

The question therefore arises, how can we use technology to solve problems that touch human lives in an adverse manner? With this question in mind, SAP Digital Interconnect undertook a transformational journey with a non-profit organisation named Women at Risk International Foundation (WARIF).

WARIF was established in 2016 to help Nigerian women overcome the pain and stigma created as a result of gender-based violence such as rape, kidnapping, slavery and human trafficking. Through its various welfare programmes, WARIF helps bring the victims back into mainstream society.

How does technology help WARIF fulfill its purpose?

SAP Digital Interconnect has a flagship service named SAP People Connect 365, a cloud enabled application that is used as a business resiliency tool by organisations to keep their employees safe during planned and unplanned events and disruptions, which was presented with a unique opportunity to help these victims of gender-based violence, by supporting their mental and emotional well-being through the of use of the its unique features.

The Role of the Midwives: The conduit for change

Nigerian rural areas have a lot of midwives who are highly respected leaders of their community. These midwives act as an interface between WARIF and the affected women. SAP People Connect 365 proves to be a technology platform for WARIF to contact the midwives and vice versa. Through the unique SMS service provided via this service, WARIF ensures that it is always in touch with the midwives and is kept up to date with all the events happening around their respective communities/geographical areas.

These activities help bring down the communication barrier between WARIF and the midwives to a large extent and prove to be a great confidence building measure by creating an environment which ensures the victims that they are always under supervision and won’t be left alone during their difficult times.

By using SAP People Connect 365, WARIF aims to reduce the time it takes to reach out to the victims, thereby instilling in them a sense of assurance that there’s always someone who has their back and would come to their rescue at the earliest.

The feeling of providing a last mile connectivity to the most vulnerable members of the community and hence helping in their mental and social/moral upliftment is truly special.
