Who is God?

A Bible Study #4

The Bible refers to one God who “is greater than all the others.” Who is that? What makes him greater than all the other gods that people worship?

2 Chronicles 2:5 And the house which I build is great: for great is our God above all gods.

“I am Jehovah, That is my name.” A translation from a Hebrew name to mean, “He Causes to Become.”

Isaiah 42:5 Thus saith God the LORD, he that created the heavens, and stretched them out; he that spread forth the earth, and that which cometh out of it; he that giveth breath unto the people upon it, and spirit to them that walk therin.

Isaiah 42:8 I am the LORD: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images.

Jehovah’s name in the Bible has been changed to LORD, with all capital letters. Jehovah’s name is included in the Bible around 7000 times. Naturally, I assume it was changed to avoid repetition. “JEHOVAH JEHOVAH,” I think you get the context. With his name being mention so often, it is apparent that he wants me to use it. Perhaps it was changed so that prayers go unanswered, or perhaps I am just a conspiracy theorist.

Exodus 3:15 And God said moreover unto Moses, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath sent me unto you: this is my name forever, and this is my memorial unto all generations.

Deuteronomy 4:39 Know therefore this day, and consider it in thine heart, that the LORD he is God in heaven above, and upon the earth beneath: there is none else.

In the scriptures, it is clear that Jehovah God is “the Most High over all the earth.” Jehovah is the only true God because he has always existed and will exist forever. He is personal, and personable, as is evident in his desire for us, for me, to use his name.

Imagine if you will, every person you meet, you only addressed them by using their gender. “Hello Male, hello Female.” I think we would all become one in the same with nothing to separate us from the dirt in the ground. That is what Jehovah God did when he made us. He separated us from the dirt in the ground, and he gave us identity.

Psalm 83:18 That men may know that thou, whose name alone is JEHOVAH, art the most high over all the earth.

Revelation 4:8 And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.

Revelation 4:11 Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou has created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.

Psalm 90:2 Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever though hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.

Why Bible translations had God’s name removed is open for debate. Perhaps Jewish tradition of using titles such as Lord, The Most High, Almighty, etc. Perhaps to avoid offending some who don’t like when names or words are mispronounced. Though, the prophet Joel was inspired to write that “everyone who calls on the name of Jehovah will be saved.” I speculate, envy. The same envy that led Cain to murder Abel, the same envy that led Jesus to be crucified.

God has many titles, but one name, Jehovah. There is a difference between a title, such as “Lord,” and a name. A title is a means of addressing someone of position, Sir, Ma’am; it is earned. A name is Given.

I am, and my name is, are not the same. I am is in reference to the self. I am, Yahweh, Elohim, Adonai, etc. My name is given to me. It is not who I am but rather an identity that who I am identifies with.

My name is August and I am strong, courageous, wise, loving, and inquisitive. I am a writer, and I am Canadian. I am, who I am.

So when praising God, in general, he is praised by his title, which is akin to saying “hey you over there” in a crowd of people. But, when using his name Jehovah; Jehovah God Almighty in heaven above, giver of life, merciful, and unconditional love. You are addressing the one true God, and not the many.

Psalm 136:1–3 O GIVE thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever. O give thanks unto the God of gods: for his mercy endureth for ever. O give thanks to the Lord of lords: for his mercy endureth for ever.

“The God of gods” and “the Lord of Lords” is unconditional love and merciful. He is Jehovah who art in heaven. Those who call upon his name with all their heart, will be saved.

Jehovah wants me to know and use his name. I think he wants his name to be known, regardless of what language it is spoken in. If he did not want me to use his name, then it would not have been written in the Bible, not even once. Just as if you, or I, do not want others to use our names, we will not tell them.

Romans 10:13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

It is important to use God’s name, Jehovah, because if not, then which of the many gods created by man are being addressed? Could be in the millions. Using his name, Jehovah is addressing the one true God and not the many.

The first time a person remembers my name warms my heart. Over time it becomes normalized. It becomes personal, and usually, we become friends.

Perhaps using Jehovah’s name is a means of building a relationship with him. A majority of Christians know that Jesus, and Jehovah want a relationship with us. It is difficult to build one when we only say “Yes boss.”

Jehovah wants to be closer to me. Learning his name has allowed me to feel much closer to him. In return he has fanned the fires of knowledge within me.

James 4:8a Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you.

Jehovah has invited me into his home. In the beginning, I was nervous, uncomfortable. But his warm embrace has made me feel welcome, and by using his name, I feel as if I am in my rightful place. I feel accepted.

“There’s only one God, so it doesn’t matter what you call him.”

His name is Jehovah, I know this, not only because of scripture, but because of the evolution of my emotions from using it.

If the Bible is truth inspired by God, and his name Jehovah is used 7000 times, then that is proof enough that Jehovah wants his name to be used.

There are many gods created by man, most designed after human emotions. Jehovah is unique in that, not only did he create the universe, but he gave me the grace, and dignity of finding him of my own free will. He is unconditional love, and merciful.

The separation of title (I am) and a name is an important distinction to make, which many don’t, or do not have the cognitive capacity to do so. By not using his name, then all we are left with is titles, and titles are empty in a crowd of infinite gods.

I am not my name. So, who am I? Find the answer, and I will know how to title my life. Jehovah blessed me with identity, and a name to encompass that identity. He blessed me with his word, and a means to identify said identity. Call to him by his name, and I see that he indeed does want me to draw closer to him.

Hello Jehovah, my name is August.
