Moon Over Miami River

Cultural Compass

Cruising Miami History with Dr. George, Resident Historian at HistoryMiami Museum. July 16, 7:00 pm — 9:00 pm.

Reflect on the history of Downtown Miami, from the Tequesta to the early settlers on the river who called this area home. Learn stories of nearby archaeological sites and see hidden neighborhoods. Take in the city skyline as you enjoy drinks and light bites.

Culturist Annalisa Damley shared with Downtown NEWS a wonderful summary of the tour: “The river is Miami’s birthplace. The river gives the city its name — derived from the Mayaimi people who lived in the area prior to colonization. The river is home to Miami’s oldest neighborhoods, its storied past, its colorful characters, its rum runners, gator wrestlers and old-time river rats. The Miami River is the heart and soul of the city. Its banks are rich with ancient artifacts, hidden neighborhoods and its history is full of lore about grit, lawlessness, and persistence. Sailing along the Miami River evokes the bygone days of its pioneering past.”

Dr. George corroborated in a brief phone chat. “The Miami River is essential to understand the origins of Miami. We can trace our history in the Miami River.”

Dr. Paul George

Through walking, coach, biking, and boat, Dr. George has led memorable journeys through South Florida’s historic neighborhoods and landmarks. As a Miami native, author, and former college professor, Dr. George has an uncanny ability to recall the most impressive details about the people and places that make Miami and South Florida unique. “Dr. Paul S. George,” the official brochure indicates, pun intended, “has toured his way to local, national, and international acclaim.”

Individual charcuterie boxes from Miami Grazing Company will be served. Beer and wine service from Island Queen Cruises included in ticket price. Must be 21+ to participate.

The Museum will charter the Island Queen, a large vessel with two decks. The lower deck is closed in and air-conditioned. The upper deck is covered on the top with open sides. Should there be rainy weather, there is plastic side sheeting, which may be rolled down. While the vessel can accommodate 140 passengers, this tour is restricted to 75 participants.

Participants will meet at Island Queen Cruises, Bayside Marketplace, 401 Biscayne Blvd, Miami, FL 33132.

Bon voyage!
