Some folks say that life isn’t a popularity contest, but I don’t find this true. I think life is a series of popularity contests, especially when it comes to my cats.

I want to be the most popular human, but my partner, Andy, has some amazing cat-whisperer skills. But that doesn’t mean I give up; it just means that I play the long game when it comes to my cat’s affections.

My major method of getting a cat to love me the best is to love bomb them. Love bombing is when you lavish someone with attention, affection, or both as a way of influencing or manipulating them.

Love bombing is a practice used by narcissists, so it’s not good to do on humans — people don’t like being played so that you can have control over them.

Cats are also independent creatures but love bombing. When done right, it can achieve excellent results. I love bombed our late cat Yoshi, and he not only ended up loving me best, but we also formed an incredibly strong bond.

Here’s how to shower your cat with love in the right way and get the best results.

An older feral cat who will never be socialized or a cat who is too freaked out by humans probably isn’t a good candidate for love bombing. You never want to force anything upon a cat or make them feel overwhelmed by the attention.

Cats have boundaries, and you need to respect them.

Every cat has a unique personality, and if you know a cat who has indicated they’re only interested in food and shelter, well, find something else to love about them.

If you’ve tried in the past to show them some affection and it wasn’t warmly received, or they hiss at you when you approach, leave them be.
