The community of people made up by just one person.

Jordan Peterson has talked about this before, it is the concept of treating yourself as a community of people. You have you yourself now in this moment, but then there are the numerous versions of you that will exist in the future shaped by the choices you make now. So a truly selfish act would be one that only benefits your current self and no future versions of you. Another thing that Jordan Peterson talks about is treating yourself as if you are someone whom you are responsible for looking after. How do these 2 concepts link?

Well you’re essentially looking after an infinite number of people they are just all you. They are all in the future that’s why it’s so easy to ignore them. I like to be thankful to my previous selves as if they are not me but someone else. (you hear people talk about this all the time when referring to themselves from many years ago referring to them as a “different person”). The same way you’re thankful for your parents or friends for being there for you, be thankful to yourself for being strong enough to make a bunch of sacrifices so that your current self can reap the benefits.

Now I’m not saying your decisions in the present and past are the only things that can effect your future self but it’s the only thing that you can control. The juice is not worth the squeeze when it come to worrying about things that are out of your control.

So try it. Evaluate your current decisions from the perspective of, is this gonna make my future worse, better or the same. The hardest one for me was sleep; accepting that I needed to sacrifice a few more hours each day so that the rest of the hours are better. The tradeoff was not worth it AT ALL. Staying up late and missing out on at least 7h30min of shut eye time means the next day is worse and I am adding to the cumulative damage to my health. Aka I was sacrificing the future for the present. Long periods of time spent doing this will make you resent your past self. Like it did to me.
