Free to Float Like Dust in the Wind

I love how nature can make you feel so small. Looking up at glaciers and galaxies…realizing you are nothing but a piece of dust in a universe billions of years old that will outlive you billions of years more…

It’s a reminder that nothing really matters. Not in a nihilistic way, but in a freeing way.

What matters becomes the things we make matter. The expansiveness of nature teaches me that we have control over what we value and how we express that value. It also teaches me that you can change your mind and be free to float around like dust in the wind — to become different versions of ourselves in the search for joy and fulfillment, only to learn that it’s a moving target.

I wrote this while feeling a little sappy (and tired) after a spontaneous 7 mile walk that was supposed to be a simple loop around the block to digest some milkshakes. The air was wonderfully warm, the stars were out (by LA standards), and the conversation was just too good. In my never-ending quest to maintain joy and fulfillment, I think last night I hit the target. We’ll see how long until we start again. ✈️
