Analogue Pocket is on the Verge of Becoming One of the Best Handhelds Ever

The Analogue Pocket is set to become a portable FPGA powerhouse in the next few weeks. Developers in the FPGA community are hard at work on porting cores over from the successful Mister project and we’ve started to see their labours bare fruit.

When firmware 1.1 released earlier this summer, it was accompanied by the launch of several third-party cores from mystery FPGA developer Spiritualized1997.

Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance were welcomed with excitement by the Analogue Pocket community.

Soon after, Spiritualized1997 would also release cores for the Game Gear, Sega Master System, and SG-1000.

The running theory is that Spiritualized1997 is a pseudonym for Analogue’s Director of FPGA Development, Keven “Kevtris” Horton, who is releasing these cores on behalf of the company in an unofficial capacity. This is to avoid Analogue being directly linked to supporting cores that allow playing downloaded ROMs of officially licensed software.

Besides the above listed cores from Spiritualized1997, the FPGA community has started to show immense support for the Pocket.

Recent releases include:

Neo Geo — One of the earliest third-party cores released for the Pocket was also one of the most surprising. Still in its beta phase, the Neo Geo core already allows you to play around with dipswitch settings and bios region. Most games are supported right now but future updates should allow support for more demanding software like SNK vs. Capcom.
